2016 Xenopus Course | April 5-18, 2016
Cell & Development Biology of Xenopus: Gene Discovery & Disease

Location: Cold Spring Harbor, NY
Application Due Date: January 31, 2016

In addition to the traditional skills taught in the Xenopus course, this year, emphasis will be on CRISPR-based gene modification and biological imaging. Based on student gene interest, instruction will be given for the design of CRISPR targeting constructs. The course will also phenotype embryos after CRISPR-mediated depletion of the gene product using all of the power of Xenopus.

A Quantitative Imaging (QI) course is also planned. Group interactions will be built to image Xenopus embryos using the latest imaging methods. Since the huge success last year, students have the possibility to try light-sheet, high-speed live confocal, and super-resolution imaging methods.

Worldwide Amphibian Concerns

There are environmental concerns about the precipitous worldwide decline of amphibian populations. New O.I.E. (World Organization for Animal Health) regulations will soon mandate disease testing of amphibians prior to shipment. Two disease organisms of particular concern are the Chytrid fungus and Ranaviruses.

Nasco has chosen to be pro-active about these new rules and have tested our Xenopus colony in advance of the mandated requirement. We are pleased to report that all of our sample frogs received a clean bill of health in February 2016.
