Bundle includes three complete kits outlined below:
Photosynthesis, Plants, and Food Kit. Student teams use atom models to build carbon dioxide and water molecules then "react" them to form sugar and oxygen molecules. Next, students read about plants’ essential role as producers, using the process of photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide, water, and energy contained in light into energy stored in the bonds of sugar, and other food molecules. Also introduces chloroplasts, plant organelles involved in photosynthesis. All equipment is reusable. Contents: 12 model carbon atoms (black spheres with 4 pegs; set of 8), 12 model hydrogen atoms (white cylinders with 1 peg; set of 15), 12 model oxygen atoms (blue cylinders with 2 pegs; set of 20), 12 model covalent bonds (white tubes; set of 40), two transparencies (Modeling Photosynthesis and Comparing Plant and Animal Needs), 28 student worksheets and guides, and teacher’s guide.
Seed Staining Kit. Students learn how to differentiate between plant food stored as a simple sugar and food stored as a starch. Using a step-by-step procedure, students first dissect the seeds and then treat them with reagents. This helps to determine the quantity and location of the sugar and starch. Individualized, open-ended worksheets provide additional investigations for student exploration. Contents: 15 three-section treating dishes, 15 single-edged razor blades, three droppers, three bottles of Lugol’s solution, three drop-controlled bottles of Tetrazolium solution, package of kidney bean seeds, 30 student worksheets and guides, and teacher’s guide with MSDS.
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Kit (Developed by SEPUP). Part One is an investigation into the reactions of photosynthesis and cellular respiration using a series of images and statements. Students then discuss these processes relative to ecosystems and the carbon cycle. In Part Two, students read about the details of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, including light and dark reactions, glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. All equipment is reusable. Contents: six sets of eight Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration cards, six sets of 12 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration strips, six sets of two Category cards, transparency (Kelp Forest Food Web), 28 student worksheets and guides, and teacher’s guide.
