Category Manager

DEPARTMENT: Sales

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Use Voice-of-Customer, Industry trends, and other Market Research (both internal and external) to develop short and long term category strategic plans that meet customer needs and attain budgeted financial measures.
  • Plan assortments that leverages market opportunities and competitive gaps.
  • Develop products that differentiate Nasco while providing desired financial return.
  • Develop and establish pricing strategies and manage product price points to maximize sell-through and profitability, achieving all established financial objectives.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing to determine Supplier Matrix and support supply chain strategies that create competitive advantages. Work with internal (Purchasing and Logistics) and external (Suppliers and third party logistics) partners to reduce expenses linked to our supply chain activities.
  • Review mock-ups of new catalogs and re-paginations to make recommendations and decisions regarding item positioning, space allocation, catalog layout, cover / back cover product selections and overall book flow.
  • Proof copy, photography and layouts for all offers; assist in the procurement of product information and photography as necessary.
  • Determine ads, drops and carry forward products, based on previous product / category performance and inventory availability, in development of specific offer assortment and merchandising plans.
  • Provide merchandise up-sell and cross-sell recommendations to increase average order size, enhance order profitability and provide alternatives for backordered and out-of-stock goods.
  • Manage product life cycles, developing alternatives to increase sales and extend sales performance; working with suppliers and Supply Management staff to develop exit strategies for non-performing products and categories.
  • Develop and maintain clear communications with all company personnel with the goal of improving Customer Service. Provide expertise in problem solving.
  • Maintain good company image, supplier relations and professional correspondence through many daily business contacts. Answer or respond to all outside inquires and opportunities in a professional and timely manner. Portray a personal and professional image that is consistent with the company's goals of fairness and honesty to suppliers.
  • Assist Director of Educational Sales in identifying, developing and implementing changes and procedural enhancements and efficiencies which will improve the operation of the department and ability to meet company goals and objectives. Provide input into direction and vision for future department growth and activities.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop Merchandising Team members to become successful contributors, both personally and professionally.
  • Mentor, train, and motivate future company leaders across all Department staffs.
  • Support major company initiatives such as technology infrastructure upgrades, expansion into new areas, and acquisitions
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field.
  • Six to eight years related experience and/or training. Direct marketing industry, retail, merchandising and buying experience preferred.
  • Classroom experience and success in selling into the educational market, both at the district and school level.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organizational skills, time management skills and problem solving ability.
  • Must be self-motivated, show good planning techniques and have a strong understanding of merchandising and promotional concepts.
  • Strong product and industry knowledge, as well as experience in product development, assortment methods, buying and merchandising methods is necessary.
  • A strong background in business with an understanding of mathematical principles, economic fundamentals and business writing is required.
  • Prefer direct marketing, ecommerce and/or retail buying and merchandising experience and market exposure.
  • Ability to represent the company effectively and professionally in dealings with suppliers is essential.
  • Proficiency in the use of computerized purchasing and inventory management systems, as well as PC-based spreadsheet analysis, statistics and data base applications is required.
PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORK EFFORT:
  • Keying/typing, sitting, standing, walking.
  • Constant mental and/or visual attention; the work is either repetitive or diversified requiring constant alertness in an office environment.
  • The job is typically performed under comfortable working conditions; any disagreeable elements are generally absent during normal performance of the job.
  • Compliance with company attendance standards.
  • Travel Requirements are minimal.
  • FLSA status: Salaried — Exempt.
