Sorry, this product is no longer available. Inspire student interest in STEM learning! Developed by a professor of Planetary Science who serves as the leader of the NASA OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return space mission, this program links students directly to the science, engineering, and program management involved in planning an actual space mission, and inspires student interest in STEM learning. Students begin to think of themselves as explorers who work along with the scientists, engineers, and astronauts involved in space mission development and flight. Program includes five engaging modules, each with a hands-on component. Each module features a specific focus and includes background information, links to related videos, activities, worksheets, and a challenge.
Module 1 - Students will be introduced to the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, learn how to design a space mission, learn about interesting types of scientific equipment aboard various robotic space vehicles, and create a model of the OSIRIS-REx vehicle.
Module 2 - Focuses on the energy and speed needed to travel to different parts of the solar system. Challenges students with a card-based board game where they build rockets and complete realistic space missions based on accurate scientific and engineering criteria.
Module 3 - Covers the basics of gravity and planetary orbits with a challenge to use this information to perform loop-de-loop physics experiments.
Module 4 - Students learn the properties of asteroids and the potential of asteroid mining using real meteorites, terrestrial rocks (“meteorwrongs”), and sample identification tools. Included meteorite identification kit will have students apply the knowledge they have learned and further inspire them to explore their own environments in search of meteorites.
Module 5 - Focuses on the similarities and differences between asteroids and comets. Various actual space missions that have explored comets are discussed, and students will have the opportunity to build their very own comet.
