This premier forensic science curriculum is designed for middle school, high school, and undergraduate students and is comprised of independent, hands-on laboratory kits. Each kit allows students to process different evidence from multiple crime scenes in a complex murder mystery scenario. Sets clear goals and expectations for students and is aligned with National Science Education Standards. Supplies are included for up to 30 students working in six groups.

Suspicious powder was found on several surfaces at two different crime scenes. Your students must determine if the powder is gunpowder or another substance. Students will do a series of presumptive tests to determine if powder from several surfaces is gunpowder, and then learn how to analyze gunpowder with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) using a set of video clips filmed at the SEM lab at Marshall University. Includes a fully illustrated teacher’s manual, SEM data for 12 particles (graphs and images), six positive and negative control swabs, gunshot residue swabs taken from six different surfaces, 50 alcohol swabs, pipettes, six bottles of diphenylamine, and six bottles of sodium rhodizonic acid. Materials for 30 students working in groups of six.
