Grades 7-12.

When investigators discovered three deceased victims at a vehicle crash site, they retraced the vehicle’s path and discovered several pieces of broken glass lying in the roadway. By examining the refractive index of various glass fragments, students will learn the importance of glass analysis in the forensic field and how this analysis is performed by forensic scientists. Students will learn to microscopically determine the refractive indices of several known types of glass, then apply what they have learned in the comparison of glass fragments collected from a crime scene to a potential source. Contains materials for 30 students working in groups of six and a fully illustrated teacher’s manual. Kit includes six bottles each of refractive index liquids 1, 2, and 3, six samples each of reference glass for bottles, headlights, known evidence, and unknown evidence, and 72 microscope slides with coverslips.
