Grades 7-12.

When investigators discovered three deceased victims at a burned vehicle crash site, they questioned whether the burned vehicle was the result of the crash or foul play. Students will learn how forensic scientists analyze fire debris for the presence of ignitable liquid residue in suspected arson cases as they examine debris from the interior of a burned vehicle at the crash site. Students will presumptively test fire debris for the presence of specific ignitable liquids by first analyzing known reference samples, then applying what they have learned in an attempt to determine if the fire was started under suspicious circumstances. Contains materials for 30 students working in groups of six and a fully illustrated teacher’s manual. Kit includes three diesel fuel and three gasoline spiked carpet reference samples, six diesel fuel and six gasoline colorimetric gas detection tubes, 12 analysis containers with lids, and six colorimetric tube seals and openers.
