  • Units are arranged in a developmental sequence
  • During the first 2 months, as students become familiar with classroom routines, they learn about of inquiry, measurement, and representation
  • Over the course of the following months, they are introduced to increasingly complex concepts, work with more variables at a time, and take on investigations that span several days (for example, growing seeds under different conditions)
  • Entire curriculum consists of 10 units, grouped into 5 modules
  • Each unit contains the following:
    • 20 daily lesson plans
    • Table of Contents for the 20 lessons

  • Each daily lesson plan includes 3 pages:
    • First page offers a general overview that describes the science concepts being addressed, the day’s learning goals, the targeted vocabulary, and suggestions for discussing the day’s investigation
    • Second page suggests ways the teacher can integrate instruction in language and literacy skills with the day’s investigation
    • Suggestions cover 5 areas considered especially important by the U.S. Department of Education, including Speaking and Listening, Reading Comprehension, Alphabet Knowledge, Phonological Awareness, and Print Awareness
    • Third page outlines the way the day’s investigation proceeds through the steps of the ScienceStart! Simple Science Cycle (Reflect and Ask, Plan and Predict, Act and Observe, and Report and Reflect)
