15-Piece Mystery Density Set
Grades 7-12.
This set of 12 samples represents two sets of materials (acetyl and polystyrene) that, while sharing similar appearances, represent differing densities. The set is meant to be used as an inquiry lesson in which students are asked to measure and graph the masses and volumes of all 12 pieces without the knowledge that the 12 samples actually represent two different substances. Proper analysis of the graph will point students to the conclusion that there are in fact two substances of differing densities. Use to introduce the concept of density, to reinforce the basic principle of graphing data as a means of data analysis, and to test students’ abilities to properly collect dimension, mass, and volume measurements. Additional material may be needed. Ideas for supplemental activities are included.
