DNA Electrophoresis Lab - DNA Fingerprinting
Grades 5–12.
DNA electrophoresis is an easy, fun, exciting, and safe activity to perform in the classroom. It is a widely used technique that is carried out in DNA fingerprinting, paternity testing, genetic testing, and genetic engineering. Basic concepts of DNA fingerprinting are featured in this lab by comparing crime scene DNA with suspect DNAs. Fingerprinting patterns are separated by agarose gel electrophoresis and the students determine who may have done it!
Includes: Ready-to-Load™ DNA samples, UltraSpec-Agarose™ powder, practice gel loading solution, electrophoresis buffer, InstaStain® Blue and FlashBlue™ stain, calibrated pipet, 100 ml graduated cylinder, and microtipped transfer pipettes. For eight gels, 2–3 students each, 16–24 students total. For use with the DNA Electrophoresis Station. 60-minute lab. Includes a link to instructions and a teacher guide.
