Nasco Model Magic Mask Classroom Kit
Grades K–5 Let students showcase emotions by forming an expressive art project. This kit includes a lesson plan and enough supplies for a class of 24 students to use their imagination to create a mask of an emotion-filled character they design using colorful modeling clay.
Before they begin sculpting, take the time to discuss emotions and feelings with your class. After they have a better idea of what emotions they want to showcase, instruct them to cut out an oval shape as big as their head out of tag board. Then have them sketch the face of their character featuring a specific emotion of their choosing. As they're sketching, encourage them to visualize what that emotion looks like through shapes, lines, and forms and what story they want to tell.
After they're done sketching, have them apply a thin layer of glue onto the mask and start adding modeling clay to build their character's face. Finally, after they glue a dowel at the bottom of their mask and let it dry, have them present their finished masks, what emotion they chose, and how they used the modeling clay to tell a story about the character and the emotion it's expressing.
After completing this project, students will be able to say:
- I can identify feelings and emotions.
- I can create shapes, lines, and forms to make a face out of clay.
- I can tell a story using the character I created.
Kit includes:
- Model Magic Mask Lesson Plan, Vol. 5
