Be sure your students are reading the types and complexities of texts as outlined in Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This set contains books suggested by the CCSS as ideal examples of high-quality fiction and nonfiction text. Set of five includes the following books:

Boy: Tales of Childhood - An autobiographical telling of the childhood of famed children’s author Roald Dahl. Dahl describes what it was like to attend an English public school, his summer holidays in Norway, his trips to the sweet shop, and how he avoided being a prefect. 176 pages.

Dragonwings - Eight-year-old Moon Shadow journeys from China to America to meet his father, Windrider, for the first time. Moon Shadow grows to love and respect his father, and Windrider finds the strength to pursue his dreams in the face of prejudice, poverty, homesickness, and natural disaster. 248 pages.

Immigrant Kids - The name “America” was synonymous with the word “freedom” to many immigrants, but once they arrived, they learned what they had pictured was very different from what they encountered, including crowded cities and few jobs. Learn how the children of immigrants stepped up to help their families by taking jobs selling newspapers, working in sweatshops, and delivering goods. 80 pages.

Just So Stories - Fantastical stories offer entertaining reasons as to how the alphabet was invented, how the camel got its hump, and far more! 224 pages.

Kids at Work: Lewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor - In the early 1900s, Lewis Hine photographed child laborers, some as young as three years old, tending looms in cotton mills or working in coal mines. This book explains why young children had to work, the jobs available to young children, the working conditions the children faced, and Hine’s struggle to stop the practice. 112 pages.
