CYBER.ORG™ Discover Volcanoes Kit

Grades 7.

Students work for an engineering firm that has been hired by a city planner to design a city around a volcano. The firm must first build a model environment using cost efficient materials/chemicals to represent a volcano, lake, village, crops, trees, and livestock. The model environment must include barriers to protect the villagers in the event of a volcanic eruption. In teams, students will use the engineering design process as a guide to research concepts, brainstorm designs, build, and test their own volcano. Throughout the module, students will discover classifications, types and components of volcanoes, eruption categories, acids, bases, and pH scale. This kit contains enough materials for 10 groups. Plastic water bottles and a half gallon of milk will be needed for this module and are not included in the kit. Access to curricula materials can be found at http://www.cyber.org.

Materials in this kit include: lemon juice, peroxide, milk of magnesia, flour, salt, powdered dish soap, liquid dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, food coloring, cooking oil, foam cups, litmus paper, storage containers, measuring cups, plastic bowls, and poster board.
