Grades 7.
Students decide to compete in the Google Lunar XPRIZE® that challenges non-government entities to safely land a rocket on the moon. To better understand the principles of a rocket, students start their process with a model-sized replica of their design in form of a water-fueled bottle rocket. In addition to concepts like drag and aerodynamics, students learn about rockets and space programs through history. Using the engineering design process as a guide, the students design, build, and test a bottle rocket that reaches a height of at least nine meters and safely lands in a designated area. This kit contains enough materials for 10 groups. Access to curricula materials can be found at http://www.cyber.org.
Materials in this kit include: foam board, washers, foam cups, foam bowls, cone-shaped party hats, garbage bags, bottle rocket launcher, altitude finder, felt sheets, scale, hot glue gun and glue sticks, and string. Materials in this kit that are not included: Bottles for the rockets are not included. This is a supply that varies per team design and can be brought in by students.
