CYBER.ORG™ Discover Earthquakes Kit

Grades 7.

Students are employed by an architectural and civil engineering firm and have been assigned to create and present a proposal for a new headquarters office building for a worldwide producer of chemical-based products. Their team specializes in earthquake-resistant office tower designs. Using the engineering design process as a guide, students research concepts related to structures, brainstorm designs, build, and test the scale model of an office building on a shake table. Materials in this kit include: string, marbles, screw eye hooks, toothpicks, assorted candy, masking tape, cotton balls, cardboard box, plastic cups, and zinc washers.
