Engraving with Tempera Paint Lesson Plan Classroom Kit

Grades 6–12 Have students make a mark by engraving works of art that depict movement. This kit includes a lesson plan with complete directions and enough supplies for a class of 24 students to create a mixed media art project from scratch that shows motion through the use of engraved color and lines.

Before they get started, show students examples of historical and contemporary artworks that depict movement. As you show these examples, discuss the techniques used to create each sense of motion and later ask them to explain what type of motion they are seeing when you show them more artworks.

Afterwards, have students prepare by creating a mind map in their sketchbooks that depict the first things that come to mind when they think of movement as well as thumbnail sketches of their compositions before they start drawing, coloring, and engraving.

After completing this project, students will be able to say:

• I can create a mind map
• I can make a finished mixed media tempera engraving using colors and lines
