Lesson in a Box™ Simple Robotics Curriculum for BBC micro:bit Handheld Computer
Grades 5-8.
Lesson in a Box™ Simple Robotics Curriculum is a complete set of electronics and teaching resources that effectively combines the STEM/STEAM concepts of engineering design, technology, computing, robotics, and physics into lessons can be presented with minimal teacher effort. Some of the lessons have students build a robot and program it. Robots utilize the BBC micro:bit device (not included, SB53386) and a clippable motor driver board designed specifically for this type of activity. Using the BBC micro:bit allows students to use a feature-packed, easy-to-use handheld computer that can be coded with languages that suit every ability level. No soldering required.
All teacher resources are arranged in a teacher, user-friendly way, including technician's notes, lesson plans, resources, and workbooks or worksheets. There is also an introduction to the Lesson in a Box™ kit that gives an overview of its contents, setup guides for technicians, and an overview of the included lessons.
Affordable, reusable kit comes with 10 student sets and 1 teacher set of electronics in a large reusable Gratnells tray. Each set includes:
- Kitronik Klip Motor Driver Board for BBC micro:bit
- 2 Kitronik clippable TT motor boards (with cable tie and screws)
- 2 right-angled geared hobby TT motors
- 2 injection-molded wheels with 5 spokes each for TT motors
- Set of 10 clip leads
- Ping pong ball for robot castor
- Simple chassis template
Kit also comes with a USB stick drive that contains the following:
- Design and technology project (6-week design challenge)
- Design and technology lesson for prototyping
- Computing lesson - sequencing, selection, and iteration
- Computing lesson - computational thinking: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms
- Physics/combined science - distance time experiments
