This series of simple, highly visual lab activities introduce students to the effects of acids and bases on litmus indicators, indicator solutions, and natural indicators. Activities begin by discussing the differences between acids and bases, then examines the use of pH test paper and the interpretation of the results. Students will realize that acid and base discussions apply to not just chemistry, but also biology and the study of the human body. Lab activity uses Chemplates® to study side by side the reaction of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide when mixed with other liquids and on pH paper.
