Kit introduces students to the concept of energy conversion through the study of a simple electrochemical cell connected to an electric motor. Students will design and conduct an experiment that uses a wet cell chamber to determine which combination of different materials works best to convert the potential chemical energy into electric energy, which allows them to rank the metals tested in order of reactivity. Students will also investigate how the distance between the metals, the direction of current flow, and the amount of metal surface area impacts the electrical flow of the wet cell. Includes 30 packages of table salt, 12 strips each of copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc, six electric motors, six wet cell chambers, six black wire leads with alligator clips, six 30 ml dropper bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, six 30 ml graduated cups, six 270 ml plastic cups, six small pieces of sandpaper, six red wire leads with alligator clips, six plastic spoons, two transparencies, a teacher’s guide with MSDS, and 28 student worksheets and guides. For 24 students.
