Contains enough materials for one additional group of four students. To be used with main kit (SB45741M). In this multi-part investigation, students explore factors that affect, and chemical principles that relate to, the rate of metal corrosion. Depending upon the depth of the experience desired, this set of activities can take from two to five class sessions. Early on, students investigate the immediate impact of factors such as salinity, coatings, and contact with other metals on the corrosion of iron, steel, aluminum, and zinc. On subsequent days, students make additional observations and present their results to the class. A final reading further describes some conditions that affect the rate of corrosion of iron and steel, plus several other chemical principles associated with these conditions such as oxidation-reduction reactions. The activity concludes with a discussion of the impact of corrosion on materials and the environment. Enough materials for 24 students.
