Introduction to Microbiology: Bacterial Growth and Staining
Grades 7-12.
Students sample and grow bacteria, then learn techniques for studying the bacteria they have grown. Two different staining techniques will be performed on bacterial cells to study the morphology and to determine if the collected bacteria are gram-positive, gram-negative, or both. Kit includes: 20 sterile petri dishes, two prepared nutrient agar (200 ml), 40 sterile cotton swabs, methylene blue (30 ml), crystal violet (30 ml), gram’s iodine (30 ml), safranin O (30 ml), four bottles of 95% ethanol (30 ml), and package of 72 microscope slides.
