With this experiment, students will learn: how to isolate DNA from onion, strawberry, or tomato cells, what DNA looks like in solution, how to spool DNA from solution, what DNA looks like after it is spooled from solution, the structure of DNA, and the function of DNA. Kit components: DNA extraction buffer, transfer pipettes, wooden sticks, large test tubes, and small test tubes. Required for experiment, but not included in kit: vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, lettuce, or scallions, fruits such as ripened strawberries (fresh or frozen), bananas, or grapes, and 70% or 91% clear isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Approximately 30 minutes long.
