Derwent charcoal pencils are made from natural charcoal particles mixed with fine clays in a 5 mm strip. There are three grades included:light, medium, and dark. The light charcoal pencil is made with more clay and less charcoal, giving a hard texture and a range of delicate, light-gray tonal marks. The medium charcoal pencil is made with a balanced mixture of fine clays and charcoal to create mid-tone marks. The dark charcoal pencil is made with more charcoal and less clay to create a soft, velvety texture with a deep black mark and a good range of lighter tones.
