Coronavirus DNA Test Model Kit

Grades K–10 By creating 3D models of the Coronavirus DNA tests, students learn about complex structures, systems, and processes in a simple, straightforward way. This timely and relevant, hands-on journey helps students develop a deeper understanding of the history-changing COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV) pandemic.

How it works:

• Model explores the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based DNA test used to see who has the virus by using a reverse transcriptase enzyme to convert RNA to DNA, administering the PCR test with a Taq DNA polymerase and visualizing the result with fluorescent dyes
• Students first assemble a model to represent a structure or an entire system as an aid to develop questions and explanations, then generate data and observations that can be used to make predictions and communicate ideas to others
• Model covers real-time PCR, reverse transcriptase, fluorescent dyes, DNA primers, DNase and RNase
• Based on NGSS Standards
• Kit includes enough materials for 10 paper models and a comprehensive teacher resource guide
