Cookie Jar Mystery - A Study in Forensic Science - Summer Camp Kit

Grades 4-5.

Fun, interactive, and project-oriented course engages students in the area of forensic science.

• Students will become crime scene investigators as they examine and analyze forensic evidence to solve the mystery of the broken cookie jar
• Facilitates scientific observation, sample examination, analysis, lab work, testing, interviews, and field work
• Consists of 12 lessons, each approx. 1 hour:
  • Lesson 1 - Explore the challenge of visual memory and eyewitness testimony in this activity of Did You See That?
  • Lesson 2 - Learn about the composition of ink by making ink chromatographs
  • Lesson 3 - Take a closer look at the differences in nontoxic white substances and at the world of poison science
  • Lesson 4 - Use pocket hand lenses to experience fiber analysis, and learn to distinguish between class evidence and direct (conclusive) evidence
  • Lesson 5 - Work with hair samples to help identify the suspect
  • Lesson 6 - Learn about the importance of trace evidence in determining where something happened by exploring how pollen can be used as evidence
  • Lesson 7 - Compare and contrast bite marks
  • Lesson 8 - Delve into blood typing with the use of a blood evidence substitute
  • Lesson 9 - Learn about whorls and ridges, fingerprinting technique, and more with authentic Ten Cards for each student to make a record of their prints
  • Lesson 10 - Straightforward explanation and lesson helps learners narrow the field of suspects through use of the genetic code
  • Lesson 11 - Learn how to sort the truth from the lies in questioning suspects, and take another trip to the scene of the crime for another look
  • Lesson 12 - Culminating activity encourages students to put all the puzzle pieces together to solve the mystery
