Test the solubility of each possible component of a commercially available pain reliever in an organic solvent, ethyl acetate, and in a basic aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and use the results to create a procedure to separate components in a mixture and determine percent composition. Meets Big Idea 3, Investigation 9, and Primary Learning Objective 3.10.
Kit includes:
750 ml ethyl acetate
750 ml sodium bicarbonate, 10%
250 ml hydrochloric acid, 6M
50 g sucrose
100 g acetaminophen
100 g acetylsalicylic acid
100 pH strips 1-14

Materials needed but not supplied:
100 ml beakers
125 ml Erlenmeyer flask
Filter paper
Graduated cylinders
Hot water and ice baths
Separatory funnels
Lab stand with ring clamps
Test tubes
Laboratory spatulas
Distilled or deionized water
