Students will design a buffer that can maintain a pH within a narrow range when certain amounts of acid and base are added. Meets Big Idea 6, Investigation 16, and Primary Learning Objective 6.18.

1,000 ml ammonia, 0.1M
1,000 ml sodium dihydrogen phosphate, 0.1M
1,000 ml citric acid, 0.1M
1,000 ml sodium monohydrogen citrate, 0.1M
1,000 ml sodium hydroxide, 0.2M
1,000 ml hydrochloric acid, 0.2M
1,000 ml pH 7 buffer
25 g sodium acetate
25 g sodium hydrogen phosphate
25 g ammonium chloride
50 g sodium dihydrogen citrate
50 g sodium citrate
25 g sodium chloride

Materials needed but not supplied:
Electronic balance, 0.01 g precision
150 ml and 250 ml beakers
50 ml buret
Lab stands with burette clamps
10 ml and 100 ml graduated cylinders
pH meter
Magnetic stirrer, stir bar, and stirring rod
Wash bottle
Distilled water
