Design a procedure to determine the buffering agents that are in different household products such as foods, beverages, and over-the-counter drugs. Meets Big Idea 6, Investigation 15, and Primary Learning Objective 6.20.

Kit includes:

  • 4 x 500 ml hydrochloric acid, 0.1N
  • 4 x 500 ml sodium hydroxide, 0.1N
  • 500 ml citric acid solution, 0.02M
  • 2 x 500 ml isopropyl alcohol, 90%

Materials needed but not supplied:

  • 250 ml beakers
  • 50 ml buret with clamp
  • 100 ml graduated cylinders
  • 125 ml Erlenmeyer flask
  • Support stand
  • Magnetic stirrer and stir bar
  • pH meter
  • Wash bottle
  • Distilled or deionized water
  • Household products to test
