Grades 7.

Students work for an engineering design firm specializing in roller coaster engineering. The firm has been hired to design a new roller coaster in hopes to reinvigorate a failing amusement park. The engineering firm has been given a strict budget for the design they create. The roller coaster must include at least one loop, one wide turn, and one sharp turn. Using the engineering design process as a guide, students research concepts related to roller coaster structures, brainstorm designs, build, and test the scale model of a roller coaster made from cardstock. Students will learn about potential and kinetic energy, centripetal force, inertia, momentum, and velocity throughout the module. This kit contains enough materials for 10 groups. Access to curricula materials can be found at http://www.cyber.org.

Materials in this kit include: assorted colors of cardstock, marbles, poster board, masking tape, flexible straws, string, and levels.
