Grades 9–12.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as mad cow disease, is a neurodegenerative, fatal condition in cattle. Consuming BSE-infected beef is believed to be the cause of a similar malady in humans, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

In this experiment, users examine simulated PCR products from several feed mills, to determine any possible violations of the 1997 ban that ended the practice of including animal parts in cattle feed. Ready-to-Load® Quickstrip® DNA samples are stable at room temperature.

Kit contains enough materials for 8 gels (2–3 students each), 16–24 students total, and includes a link to instructions and a teacher guide.
