This lesson introduces students to the concept of adding negative integers between -20 and 20 through the use of two-sided counters. The use of a number line from -20 to 20 may be of additional use to students, but is not a requirement with this lesson. For additional practice, a worksheet and bingo activity are also included with the lesson plan download. NOTE: Prior to this lesson, students should have an understanding of what a negative integer is.

  • Solve addition problems that include negative integers.
  • Analyze addition problems with negative integers to determine the sum's appropriate sign.
  • Use concrete models to solve abstract integer problems.
