By Jan Pellington and Sandra DiGiaimo, PhD.
A compilation of activities designed to teach a variety of basic mathematics skills and to provide students with experiences in logic and problem solving. Designed to meet the Standards developed by NCTM and to stress the exploration of math concepts, the development of a math vocabulary through oral and written communication, and the development of alternative strategies. The activities can be used by individual students as reinforcement or enrichment, or with small groups and teams. Some activities are teacher directed, but most are self directed with adequate instructions for the user. They are designed to allow students to manipulate math chips so that they are actively engaged in solving problems and devising strategies. Through the activities, teachers can stimulate communication of solutions and strategies with peers. Teachers using math journals can encourage their students to explain their strategies in writing as they work with the problems. Intermediate grades. 71 reproducible pages, spiral bound.
