With this kit, students can make terrific worm-like gel strands and introduce chemical changes. Simply make a calcium chloride solution, squirt in a little sodium alginate solution, and pull up beautiful gels. Add lemon juice or baking soda to the alginate solution, the red cabbage juice indicator will change colors, and you can make different colored “worms.” A great exercise for teaching concepts of scientific method and hypothesis, investigation, control, variables, solutions and solubility, using pipets, pH indicators, acid-base reaction, states of matter, and gels. Kit includes one liter of color-changing sodium alginate solution, 25 g calcium chloride, five cups, five forks, five pipets, small scoop, plastic tub, MSDS, standards, teacher notes, and laminated instructions. Grades 4-8.
