This miniature battery-powered winch handily demonstrates the relationship between gravitational potential energy and electrical energy. By measuring the current and potential of the power source and lifting known masses vertically through a measured distance, it is possible to calculate the electrical energy input, the mechanical work done, and the efficiency of the system. Work is calculated from the mass of different numbers of washers and the distance they are raised - in this case, up to two meters. Meets PSSC standards. Includes: assembled motor mounted on plastic base with attached spool and battery clip, length of nylon thread, hook up wires with alligator clips, metal washer set of 15 (same size), paper clip for hanging, and instructions. You will also need ammeter, stopwatch, and “AA” battery. Grades 6-12.
