The apparatus, designed to provide general understanding of elastic and inelastic collisions, as well as the ability to measure the elastic response of two colliding bodies, consists of a transparent acrylic tube with a vertical graduated centimeter scale that fits over a hardened steel cylinder mounted to an steel base. In use, a ball is dropped down the tube to strike the top of the steel cylinder. The height of the ball’s rebound can be measured by observing its position against the graduated scale printed on the tube. The coefficient of restitution for each of the supplied nine balls can be determined.
