Modeling Kidney Function Lab Investigation
PRODUCT DETAILS
Model the action of a kidney for a striking visual demonstration. Students construct a model of a kidney using a semi-permeable membrane to filter a completely safe solution which simulates blood. The simulated blood contains “cells” which cannot cross the semipermeable membrane, remaining in the kidney model. The resulting filtrate resembles urine, which students test for salt and other waste products. The simulated blood cells can also be seen and counted under a microscope just like real blood! Students will: investigate the function of a human kidney by constructing a model, understand the mechanism of urine formation in the kidney, observe osmosis as it relates to kidney filtration, and relate kidney function to homeostasis. For 40 students. Grade 7 and up.
