Help students understand the meaning of contour lines and other topographic maps symbols. A clear plastic raised relief model tank on an overhead projector, can actually “flood” the land to various depths. The shadow the water casts on a chalk/white board is the shape of the contour lines on the topographic map. The students will also have an opaque raised relief model of the same area as the tank model and map. Each kit includes fifteen opaque raised relief models, a clear plastic raised relief model tank, a map of the modeled area, and a reproducible activity book with worksheets about map reading, slope, and drawing cross profiles. (Food coloring and overhead projector not included.) Grade 6 and up.
