DNA has often been called “the building block of life.” Therefore, the extraction of this key biological material, which is the first step in its analysis and manipulation, is of primary importance to the field of biotechnology. Due to its submicroscopic size, most of the class may think that it is impossible to see DNA with the naked eye. With a little help, though, they can actually do just that! Students will use a simple and quick method to isolate DNA and observe its physical characteristics using a variety of sources, including onion, liver, thymus gland, wheat germ, and others. Enough materials for a class of 40 students. Grades 5-12.
