Students learn about predator-prey relationships through the analysis of owl pellets. This kit can be highly motivational to students for regular class or independent study. Both teacher and student guides are professionally produced and include easy-to-follow directions. Illustrations identify skulls of common prey species, and charts are provided for students to record the data collected. Principally, students learn about energy transfer through food chains while observing skeletal features which identify prey animals consumed. Additional studies can be conducted to evaluate animal populations within the owl’s habitat, make calculations to estimate biomass of the prey animals, or investigate the skeletal anatomy from the taxonomic features of the prey animals. Kit includes: 15 dried and fumigated owl pellets wrapped in aluminum, probes, owl pellet study chart, 15 student worksheets, and teacher’s guide. Recommended for grade 7 and up.
