Students study the basic structure of the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins by constructing three-dimensional models. Starting with the water molecule, students use easy-to-follow, individualized worksheets and color-coded plastic atoms to: construct a model of water and three monosaccharides; form a disaccharide; study isomerism; construct a part of a simple starch molecule; build models of alcohols and fatty acids, comparing them to their structural formulas; construct models of amino acids; construct four representative amino acids; and construct a protein with their models.
