CORIOLIS EFFECT. A rotating polar map on heavy-gauge Lucite® represents the earth. The path of an object moving over the earth is seen to curve as it is traced with the marking pen provided. Students develop a better understanding of this concept and its importance to studies of weather, ocean currents, and air and space navigation.
FOUCAULT PENDULUM. A free swing pendulum is mounted on the rotating polar map. It remains oscillating in the same plane even though its support is fixed to the rotating polar map. Makes clear the first widely accepted proof on the earth’s rotation demonstrated by the French scientist Foucault in 1851.
