Ketosis or the presence of ketones (acetones) in lactating cows occurs within a few days to six to eight weeks after calving. Simply place a small quantity (1-2 g) of powder on a plain white surface. Deposit one to two drops of milk, urine, or plasma onto the powder. Read results after two minutes have passed. A purple color will denote a positive test and a veterinarian should be contacted.
