Product Description

In this DVD, a top dairy-judging expert displays the skills his teams have used to bring home four national championships. Listen and watch as he discusses the parts, terminology, and skeletal structure of the dairy cow. He explains each section of the PDCA (Purebred Dairy Cattle Association) scorecard using contrasting pairs of cows to evaluate udders, dairy character, frame, body capacity, feet and legs, and faults and defects. By observing superb dairy yearlings (Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Guernsey) displaying good contrast, and using the recommended scorecard, this DVD illustrates in an understandable, concise manner, the methods for evaluating dairy yearlings. The outstanding videography clearly displays dairy yearling traits so judges can make evaluations, and the format engages interest as it tests knowledge. The Holstein Association’s revised final score assignment procedures for cow classification are explained and demonstrated. The director of type evaluations for the Holstein Association defines each major factor as he assigns factor scores and final scores. The biological range (1-50) is defined for all 15 linear traits by using a ruler and specific, anatomical locations on the cow. To show how the concepts are used during competitions, each trait is discussed and scored for four, widely-varying Holstein cows. Includes 19 quizzes and seven web links. 235 minutes.
