Creating a Multisensory Room
If you want to create or add to a multisensory room but have been discouraged by the very high cost of specialized equipment offered by some to create such rooms, Nasco would like to show you how to equip a multisensory room that will provide a full range of sensory experiences without destroying your budget! These rooms take planning and thought in their setup, in how they will be used, and by whom. Many wish to add this special feature to their Alzheimer’s care, but others want to make the room accessible to all residents at designated times of the day. Rooms should only be used under staff supervision and direction. Qualified staff needs to monitor and direct a resident’s experience in the room to ensure that it is always pleasant and appropriate. Some residents will not tolerate rapidly changing lights or designs, others may not tolerate certain aromatherapy scents, and still others may be uncomfortable in a room with lowered lighting, particularly if their eyesight is greatly inhibited by such lighting or their confusion causes them to be frightened in such settings. However, when sessions are appropriately planned and properly monitored, a resident will be able to receive positive concentrated sensory stimulation in this room and achieve heightened awareness through the experience.
When planning such a room, there are certain features you will need to consider so you can control the stimulation provided. The room you choose should be in a quiet area without distractions, disruptions, or outside noises. You will want a “blank” room, like a blank canvas, with empty wall spaces to allow for light projections on the walls, etc. Try to find a room either without windows or use heavy window coverings to eliminate most outside light so you can control the lighting within the room. Use a dimmer switch for the general room lights. This will allow you to adjust the lighting so it will be the most effective for the equipment you will be using in any particular session. The equipment within your room should offer a full range of sensory experiences so you can choose which experiences will benefit a resident during each of their sessions and ensure you will not either “overload” their senses or use equipment that will provide too subtle an experience.
In our sensory room above, we have featured equipment that will provide a full range of experiences: visual, tactile, sound, and aroma. Many of the equipment items are easily transported for multiple uses throughout the facility, adding to their value.
