1. I can't see anything when I look into the eyepiece.
- Check to make sure the microscope is plugged in and turned on.
- Check fuse located on the back of the microscope near the power switch.
- Check to see if there is light coming through the condenser. If no, check the light bulb and try replacing it.
- Check the diaphragm. If a Disc, rotate the disk until it 'clicks' into position and check the eyepiece. If an Iris, slide the arm to the side so it is wide open and check the eyepiece.
- Rotate the nosepiece until it 'clicks' into position. Check through the eyepiece.
- Rotate and check all of the objectives. One objective may be dirty and not allowing light to pass through it so it may need to be cleaned.
- If the above steps do not work, call Nasco's customer service.
2. There is a black ring around the eyepiece when I look through it.
- For a Disc diaphragm, adjust it by rotating the disc to a larger opening.
- For an Iris diaphragm, adjust the arm on the Iris until the black circle moves out of the field of view.
- Some microscopes may have a field diaphragm, which is an Iris diaphragm on the light condenser that should be adjusted.
- If the above steps do not work, call Nasco's customer service.
3. There is a black or cloudy spot when I look through the eyepiece.
- Generally this indicates dirt on the objective or an eyepiece.
- Rotate the eyepiece while looking through it, if the spot moves, the eyepiece is dirty. If the spot doesn't move, the objective is dirty.
- How to clean a lens:
- Blow away any dust near the lens.
- Use a cotton tipped applicator (Q-tip) and dip into a mild cleaner (Windex or other glass cleaner).
- Gently wipe the lens by rotating the applicator to clean.
- Use a dry applicator to remove any excess moisture.
- The same procedure can be used on eyepieces, objectives, and condensers.
4. I can't focus the objectives, mainly the 40X and 100X.
- Check to make sure that the slide is right side up, with the cover slip facing the objectives.
- Make sure the mount is not too thick especially with the 100X.
- Check the objectives to make sure they are not too loose.
- Check the Stage Rack Stop. If this has been moved, than the objectives will not come close enough to the slide to form the image. To adjust this, turn the stop screw on top of the stage or bottom of the focus mechanism counter clockwise. Re-tighten the stop nut clockwise onto the stage.
5. The image falls out of focus. The stage is dropping.
- Most microscopes have a tension ring that can be tightened to increase the stiffness of focus knobs. This will also keep the stage from falling out of focus.
- Tighten the tension ring with a 'C' wrench or by hand.
- If the above steps do not work, call Nasco's customer service.
6. Loose and/or rotating eyepieces.
- Most eyepieces are designed to turn. To lock the eyepiece, tighten the setscrew.
- Most microscopes come equipped with either a pointer wire or a calibrated pointer for locating and measuring. It is necessary to rotate the eyepiece with this feature.
